How to Remove Dried Paint from Trim, Doors, Cabinets, and Carpet
September 30, 2026A kitchen that looks dated is not necessarily a kitchen that needs replacing. In a lot of Columbia City homes the cabinetry is structurally sound, the layout works, and the only real problem is that the finish belongs to 1994. That is a color problem, and replacing an entire kitchen to solve a color problem is an expensive way to go about it.
But painting is not always the right answer either. Here is how to tell which situation you are in.
Start by Checking the Boxes, Not the Doors
Open a cabinet and look at the cabinet box. Solid wood or good plywood construction, square, with doors that still close properly and drawers that run — that is a kitchen worth keeping. A great many Whitley County kitchens fall into this category, particularly in older and rural properties where cabinetry was often built on site by a local carpenter rather than bought as a ready-to-assemble run.
What you are looking for on the other side is particleboard that has swollen at the base, shelves that have sagged permanently, or cabinet boxes that have come apart at the joints. Those do not improve with paint.
When Replacement Is the Right Call
- The layout does not work. Paint does not move a sink or add an island.
- Water damage has reached the cabinet boxes, typically under the sink or against an exterior wall.
- Particleboard or MDF has swollen and delaminated.
- Doors are damaged beyond repair across most of the run.
- You are changing countertops, appliances and flooring anyway, and the cabinetry is the last piece.
When Painting Wins
- The boxes and doors are sound and the layout works.
- The wood is dated rather than damaged — oak, hickory, honey maple.
- The kitchen has grown in stages and nothing matches. One color fixes that instantly.
- You want the change done in days rather than weeks.
- The budget is better spent elsewhere in the house.
The Cost Gap Is Not Small
Refinishing a kitchen costs a fraction of replacing it. We are not going to publish a number here, because door count, condition and whether you want the grain filled all move it substantially — but the gap between the two options is large enough that it is rarely the deciding factor once people understand it.
There is a second cost that gets forgotten: replacement usually drags flooring and countertops into the job, because the old ones do not line up with the new cabinetry. Painting leaves all of that alone.
Time and Disruption
A cabinet refinishing job is typically three to five working days on site, and the kitchen stays usable throughout — countertops and appliances remain in service while the doors are away being finished. A replacement kitchen means a period with no kitchen at all, plus the coordination of trades that comes with it.
For a family in the middle of a school year, that difference matters more than the money.
What to Know About Whitley County Kitchens Specifically
Oak and hickory are both common here, and both have open, active grain. Paint follows that grain rather than hiding it. If you are picturing a flat modern finish, the grain has to be filled first, and that adds days to the job and cost to the quote — so it needs to be a decision, not a surprise at the end. Hickory’s strong board-to-board color variation, by contrast, disappears completely under paint, which is usually welcome.
Lake properties around the Tri-Lakes have their own consideration. A house that sits unheated from October to May puts wood through humidity swings that crack finishes at the door joints if the work was done without allowing for it. Those kitchens need scheduling when the building can be brought to a stable temperature and held there while the finish cures.
Will a Painted Finish Actually Last?
Done properly, yes. Done as a weekend project with wall paint, no. The difference is entirely in preparation and product: thorough degreasing, because cooking residue is invisible and is the main reason home-done cabinet jobs peel; scuff-sanding every surface; a bonding primer suited to a slick previously finished wood; and a sprayed topcoat formulated to cure hard enough for daily handling.
Cabinets get touched more than any other painted surface in a house. The finish has to be chosen for that, not for how it looks on day one.
What About Resale?
A well-painted kitchen in a current color presents far better than a dated one, and buyers respond to it. A badly painted kitchen — brush marks, chipped edges, doors sticking to frames — is worse than leaving it alone, because it reads as a shortcut. This is one of the jobs where the gap between a good result and a poor one is most visible to someone walking in cold.
Not Sure Which You Need?
We will look at the kitchen and tell you honestly. If the boxes are gone, we will say so rather than sell you a finish that is going onto something that needs replacing. Cabinet work is part of our work throughout Columbia City, and the estimate is free and written.
If the rest of the room needs attention once the cabinets change, our interior painting in the rest of the house runs from the same crews and the same schedule.
