Beyond the Main Rooms: Interior Painting in Albion, Indiana
October 8, 2026Fall is a good time to take a closer look at your log home. Before snow and colder temperatures arrive, a walk around the exterior can help you spot areas that need attention and start planning any maintenance or restoration work.
Maybe the finish looks worn on one side of the house. Perhaps you’ve noticed a gap near a window, darkened wood beneath a gutter or a damp area that never seems to dry.
You do not need to know exactly what’s causing the problem before asking for help. Noticing a change and having it evaluated is a useful first step.
Take a Look at the Stain and Clear Coat on Your Log Home
Your log home’s finish needs regular attention, especially in areas exposed to strong sunlight and weather.
Look for the sheen diminishing, peeling, flaking, uneven fading or places where the wood appears bare. Compare different sides of the home, too. A wall that gets afternoon sun may look different from one sheltered by a porch.
These changes do not automatically mean the entire log home needs to be stripped and refinished. Depending on the existing coating and the condition of the wood, the next step may involve maintenance or more extensive preparation.
At Matthews’ Painting, we can evaluate the finish and discuss the appropriate approach for your log home.
Pay Attention to Moisture-Prone Areas
As you walk around the exterior, look closely beneath windows, near log ends and anywhere roof runoff or splashback reaches the wood.
Dark staining, persistent dampness or wood that appears deteriorated deserves attention. Cleaning may improve the appearance, but it won’t correct a leaking gutter or another source of repeated moisture.
Check that downspouts direct water away from the home and arrange to have leaves and debris cleared from gutters. If you see overflow marks or water regularly reaching the logs, have the cause evaluated.
Keep these checks at ground level. For rooflines and other elevated areas, have someone with the appropriate equipment handle the inspection and maintenance.
Look for Changes Around Windows, Doors and Log Joints
Check for visible gaps or sealant that has cracked or pulled away around windows, doors and between logs. Indoors, make note of new drafts or moisture near those same areas.
Logs naturally develop cracks, often called checks, and not every crack needs to be filled. The location and condition of an opening help determine whether it needs attention.
If you’re unsure about a gap or damaged seal, have it assessed before attempting a repair. The goal is to address the problem with a method and material suited to the home.
Keep Leaves, Vegetation and Firewood Away from the Logs
Look along the lower walls for leaves or other debris collecting against the wood. Trim back vegetation that rests against the log home, and store firewood away from the exterior.
These simple housekeeping tasks make the logs easier to inspect and help reduce places where moisture and pests can collect.
If you notice new holes, wood debris or other signs of insect activity, ask for an evaluation. Staining over an affected area won’t resolve an active pest problem. Carpenter bees love log homes and then come the Woodpeckers.
Plan Exterior Work Around Suitable Conditions
As temperatures drop, the window for exterior staining and sealing becomes more limited. The selected product’s requirements, surface moisture and weather forecast all affect when work can be completed.
A mild afternoon alone may not provide suitable conditions for application and curing.
If your home needs attention, contact us to discuss what can be assessed now and when the work should be scheduled. An inspection can also help you plan ahead for the next exterior season.
