Cloud Capping: A Fresh Take on the Color-Drenched Room
September 9, 2026When We Paint Your Home, Protecting It Is Just as Important as Painting It.
Anyone can make promises about beautiful paint finishes. But what happens to your floors, furniture, cabinets, and countertops while that work is happening?
At Matthews’ Painting Company, we believe protecting your home deserves just as much attention as painting it. That’s why we’ve introduced our new POPP Standard—Protection of Personal Property.
This updated protection system is designed to provide a cleaner, safer, and more professional experience for homeowners and commercial customers alike.
Why We Changed Our Process
For decades, painters have relied heavily on reusable canvas drop cloths. While they certainly have their place, they also have some disadvantages.
Traditional drop cloths are carried from jobsite to jobsite. Even when they’re cleaned, they can collect dust, dirt, drywall particles, and paint residue over time. They can also shift as crews walk across them, leaving areas of your flooring exposedor causing risk of slips for our professional painters.
With over 25 years in business, one of our goals at Matthews’ Painting Company is to never stop learning and never stop improving. We want to bring the very best to our customers, and as protective materials have improved – we believed our customers deserved something better. A better way to protect your home during painting.
The result is our new POPP Standard.
Carpet Protection That Stays Put
For synthetic carpeted areas, our crews install 2-mil self-adhering carpet protection film before work begins.
Unlike loose drop cloths, the film adheres directly to the carpet surface, helping it stay securely in place throughout the project—even with frequent foot traffic.
- Benefits include:
- Protection from paint drips and spills
- Reduced tracking of dirt throughout the home
- Safer walking surfaces that don’t bunch up or slide
- Continuous protection from start to finish
The protective film also helps contain dust that naturally occurs during preparation work such as sanding or drywall repairs.
Note: Adhesive carpet protection film is designed for synthetic carpeting and is not appropriate for every carpet type. Our crews determine the best protection method based on your flooring.
Paint Resistant Protection for Hardwood, Tile, Vinyl, and Other Hard Floors
Hard flooring requires a different approach.
Rather than simply laying down drop cloths, our crews carefully install red rosin paper with a water resistant additive over hard floor surfaces.
The paper is secured using low-tack painter’s tape to your floor, helping keep everything firmly in place while protecting your finished floors.
- This creates a durable barrier against:
- Paint splatter
- Dust
- Foot traffic
- Tools and equipment
- Everyday wear during the project
Because the protection is taped securely, it stays where it belongs instead of shifting around as work progresses.
Furniture Protection That Works Together
Protecting the floor is only part of the equation.
Furniture, cabinets, countertops, and other personal belongings are carefully covered with plastic sheeting when needed.
Here’s where our POPP system differs from traditional methods:
Instead of simply draping plastic over furniture, we tape the protective plastic directly to the floor protection, creating a continuous protective barrier around the work area.
This helps prevent dust from drifting underneath coverings while keeping the plastic securely in place throughout the project.
Dust Control Doesn’t End When the Painting Does
One of the biggest concerns homeowners have during interior painting projects is dust.
Our crews work to minimize dust throughout the project by vacuuming work areas regularly—not just at the end of the job.
Before removing the protective coverings, we take one additional step.
Using a fine water mister, we lightly mist the plastic coverings and carpet protection film with water. This simple process helps capture any remaining dust particles so they stay on the protective materials rather than becoming airborne when they’re removed.
Only then are the coverings carefully rolled up and disposed of.
It’s a small detail—but one that makes a noticeable difference in the cleanliness of your home.
A Cleaner Experience from Beginning to End
The POPP Standard isn’t just about protecting floors.
It’s about providing homeowners with greater confidence throughout the entire painting process.
By replacing many traditional reusable drop cloth applications with modern protective materials, we can provide:
- Better protection for floors and furniture
- Reduced dust throughout the project
- Cleaner work areas
- Less chance of tracking dirt through your home
- A more organized, professional jobsite
It’s one more example of our commitment to continually improving the experience we provide every customer.
Why Small Details Matter
At Matthews’ Painting Company, we’re always looking for ways to improve—not only the quality of our paint work but also the way we care for our customers’ homes.
Beautiful finishes matter. Professional preparation matters. But treating your home with the same care we would expect in our own homes matters just as much.
That’s the idea behind our new POPP Standard—Protection of Personal Property. Because when the project is complete, we want the only thing you’ll notice is your beautifully painted home.
