How to Remove Dried Paint from Trim, Doors, Cabinets, and Carpet

Wallpaper Removal Gives This Rochester, Indiana Stairwell a Fresh Start
October 3, 2026When preparing a room for painting, one of the first challenges is moving furniture safely and without damaging your floors. It might seem harmless to slide a table or couch across the floor, but doing so can leave behind scratches, dents or damaged furniture legs.
At Matthews’ Painting Company, we train every new painter on the proper way to move furniture before they ever step into a customer’s home. Protecting your belongings and your home is just as important as delivering a beautiful paint job. Here’s how the professionals do it.
Watch owner Jason Matthews demonstrate how to move furniture safely and with ease here.
Never Drag Furniture Across the Floor
It may be tempting to simply push a heavy dresser or dining table out of the way, but that’s one of the quickest ways to damage hardwood, laminate, vinyl, vinyl plank, tile, or even carpet.
Dragging furniture can:
- Scratch hardwood or laminate flooring
- Scuff tile or vinyl surfaces
- Tear carpet fibers
- Stress or break delicate furniture legs
- Damage antique or heirloom furniture
If a piece of furniture is light enough for two people to safely lift and carry, that’s often the best option. For heavier items, furniture sliders are the safest solution.
What Are Furniture Sliders?
Furniture sliders—sometimes referred to as “Moving Men”—are simple tools that fit underneath furniture legs or bases, allowing heavy items to glide smoothly across the floor with very little effort.
The important part is using the correct type of slider for the flooring underneath.
Use Felt Sliders on Hard Floors
For:
- Hardwood floors
- Laminate flooring
- Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)
- Tile
- Linoleum
Always use felt-bottom furniture sliders with the black foam side facing up. The felt creates a smooth, flat surface that glides gently over finished floors. If the slider encounters a tiny pebble or piece of debris, the felt is much less likely to trap it underneath and scratch the finish.
Hard plastic sliders should never be used on these hard surfaces.
Use Plastic Sliders on Carpet
For carpeted rooms, switch to hard plastic furniture sliders with the black foam side facing up. The smooth plastic surface glides easily across carpet fibers, making it much easier to move heavy furniture without excessive lifting. Many plastic sliders have one rounded edge. Positioning that rounded side in the direction you’re pushing can help the furniture move even more smoothly.
Install Sliders One Leg at a Time
Rather than trying to lift an entire piece of furniture, professionals work one corner at a time.
The process is simple:
1. Slightly lift one corner or leg.
2. Place the slider underneath with the black side against the furniture.
3. Repeat for each remaining leg.
4. Once every leg is supported, slowly slide the furniture into position.
For especially heavy furniture, two people should work together so the weight is lifted safely.
Furniture Sliders Protect More Than Your Floors
Many homeowners think sliders are only about preventing scratches, but they also help protect the furniture itself.
Heavy pieces often have:
- Thin decorative legs
- Antique wood joinery
- Delicate piano legs
- Center support rails on beds
- Decorative feet that can crack under sideways pressure
Sliding the entire piece evenly reduces stress on these areas and helps prevent expensive repairs.
