If Your Walls Could Talk: A Commercial Interior Project Checklist
October 20, 2026When colder weather brings more time indoors, you may start noticing things around your home that you would like to change. Maybe the living room feels a little stark, the bedroom could use some warmth, or you’re ready for something different after years of the same wall color.
The 2026 paint palettes offer plenty of inspiration, from warm neutrals and rich browns to muted greens and softer shades of color. At Matthews’ Painting Company, we use Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams paints, and both companies have introduced colors worth considering for your next interior project.
But which ones will work in your home? Here’s a look at several directions to explore, along with suggestions for where they can work well.
Warm Neutrals: Beige, Tan and Cream With More Depth
If you like neutral walls but want your rooms to feel warmer, this is a good place to start.
Sherwin-Williams selected Universal Khaki SW 6150 as its 2026 Color of the Year. Its warm, midtone color offers an option for homeowners who want a neutral with more presence than a pale white or light gray. Benjamin Moore’s 2026 palette also includes Sherwood Tan 1054 and Swiss Coffee OC-45, providing both earthy warmth and a softer off-white option.
Where These Paint Colors Work Well
Warm neutrals are worth considering for living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and connected spaces where you want a consistent background for furniture and décor.
They can also be a useful starting point in homes with wood floors, stained trim or warm-toned cabinets. The key is finding a shade that complements those existing finishes. A beige that looks right beside one wood floor may look too yellow or pink beside another.
Before settling on a color, compare samples with the features you plan to keep.
Rich Browns: A Deeper Color for a Comfortable Space
For homeowners ready to go a little darker, brown offers another direction.
Benjamin Moore’s 2026 Color of the Year, Silhouette AF-655, combines burnt umber with charcoal notes. It reflects the company’s interest in classic colors and the brown color family.
A deeper brown can give a room a more intimate feel, or add definition to a smaller feature without changing every wall.
Where These Paint Colors Work Well
Consider rich brown shades for a dining room, home office or bedroom where you want a deeper, more enclosed feeling.
If you prefer to keep the walls light, a darker color on built-in shelving or an interior door may provide the change you’re looking for.
Lighting matters here. Look at your sample during the day and with the lamps or overhead lights you normally use at night. Make sure you enjoy the color in both conditions, especially in rooms you use most often after dark. In addition, hold your color samples up to the wall or tape them to different walls, rather than looking at the color sample on a table or down in front of you.
Muted Greens: An Approachable Way to Add Color
Green offers plenty of variety, from a quiet gray-green to a deeper shade with blue undertones.
Benjamin Moore’s 2026 palette includes Raindance 1572 and Narragansett Green HC-157. Muted greens and blue-greens also appear in other paint companies’ 2026 forecasts, making this a color family worth exploring if you want to move beyond neutrals.
Where These Paint Colors Work Well
Softer greens are good candidates for bedrooms, bathrooms and living rooms where you want some color without a strong contrast.
Deeper greens can bring more definition to a dining room, office, kitchen island or built-in cabinetry. They are also worth sampling alongside wood, stone and other natural materials already in your home.
As with any color, undertones make a difference. One green may lean blue, while another looks warmer or grayer. Seeing it next to your flooring, countertops and furniture will help narrow the choices.
Soft Color: A Subtle Alternative to White Walls
Adding color doesn’t have to mean choosing a dark or bold shade.
Benjamin Moore’s 2026 palette includes First Crush CSP-310, a soft blush, and Batik AF-610, a dusty mauve. These offer options for homeowners who want a lighter room with a little more color and personality.
Where These Paint Colors Work Well
Soft colors are worth considering for bedrooms, guest rooms, sitting rooms and smaller spaces where you want a gentle change.
They can also work as a backdrop for artwork, patterned fabrics or furniture you already love. Rather than picking the wall color first, you might pull a subtle shade from something in the room and use that as your starting point.
Test carefully, though. A hint of pink, purple or green on a small sample can become more noticeable when it covers an entire wall.
Earthy Colors: Bringing Warmth Into Everyday Rooms
Clay, terracotta and other earth-inspired shades offer another way to introduce warmth.
Sherwin-Williams’ 2026 forecast includes a Sunbaked Huespalette, while Benjamin Moore includes Southwest Pottery 048in its 2026 collection. These palettes provide inspiration for homeowners drawn to warmer, earthier colors.
Where These Paint Colors Work Well
Earthy shades are worth exploring for dining rooms, kitchens, entryways and rooms with brick, wood or warm-toned tile.
The right shade can help connect those existing materials with the rest of the room. Pay attention to how much warmth is already present, particularly if your floors or cabinets have strong orange or red undertones.
A more subdued wall color may work better than adding another equally strong warm tone.
Your Home, Your Color Choice
These suggestions are starting points. You don’t have to paint a bedroom green or a dining room brown just because those colors appear in a trend palette.
Unless you’re painting with plans to sell, the most important question is whether you enjoy the color and how it makes your space feel.
You might want a restful bedroom, a bright kitchen or a living room with more personality. Someone else may want a completely different feeling in those same rooms. Both choices can work.
If you are preparing to sell, broad buyer appeal deserves more consideration. Otherwise, let trends introduce you to possibilities, then choose a color you’ll be happy living with.
See the Color in Your Own Home Before Deciding
Before making your final selection, look at samples in the room you plan to paint.
Check them beside your flooring, trim, cabinets and furniture. View them in morning light, afternoon light and under your usual evening lighting. If the color will continue into a hallway or adjoining room, evaluate it there, too.
An online photo can help you find ideas, but it cannot show exactly how a paint color will look in your home.
